Are You Taking Advantage of Living at Home?

It’s actually a great thought if you think about it. It may sound strange, but living with your parents has its perks. Many teens will go their entire time living with their parents without actually reaping the benefits.

“So I live at home with my parents. What’s the big deal?” Are you nuts? You have no idea the position you are in.

You need to be reaping the benefits of living at home right now if you’re not already doing so.

What’s So Great about Living at Home?

First of all, you live with your parents; which means that you pay no rent, no bills and you have minimal responsibilities.

So you may hate the chores you have to do around the house. You may even want to run and hide when asked to take your little brother or sister somewhere. But if you think about it, what’s being asked of you really isn’t that much compared to what you’re getting in return.

That’s something I never realized until I got much older. I used to complain a lot about school. I remember my mom saying to me one day, “I wish all I had to do was go to school.”

I didn’t understand what she meant then, but man do I now. Compared to working almost every day and managing bills, sometimes I wish all I had to do was go to school.

So if you look at the big picture, living at home definitely has its perks.

How Can You Reap the Benefits?

If you’re old enough to get a job… get one. Making your own money gives you a sense of independence, not to mention it can help you get the things you want without having to ask your parents to buy it for you.

Be careful not to spend your money on unnecessary things though. The whole point of working is to save up. You never know when you may need that extra cash. One day you will be in the market for a car. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a few thousand saved up just for that?

If you have chores you have to do… do them. Parents don’t make you do chores to get back at you or to be mean. They make you do them to teach you responsibility which goes a long way when you’re out of the house and on your own.

Unless you plan on being worth a lot of money in the future to where you can hire maids, I suggest you start getting used to doing chores.

Your parents won’t be around forever to pick up after you and cook for you. Eventually you’ll need to learn how to do these things on your own, so why not start now?

Living at home isn’t so bad if you look at the big picture. To be honest, you’re pretty much getting a free ride right now and you should probably take advantage of it as best as you can.
