How to Deal With Annoying Parents

Many times parents think that you can be a handful, but at the same time, they can be a handful as well. Sometimes they tend to forget what you go through as a teen.

Dealing with annoying parents can be a toughie, but there are some ways around it. You have to be tactful and in no way disrespectful. You just have to know how to work around them.

Get a Hobby

A good way to prevent from being annoyed by your parents is by getting a hobby. Participating in an extracurricular activity at school can be an awesome way to getting away from your parents for a while.

Most of the time they’ll be so thrilled about you getting out and doing something, that they’ll have less time to nag you about anything.

An added bonus would be if you can handle more than one extracurricular activity at the same time. It would be even less time that you would have to be at home and by the time you do get home, it’s time to eat, shower, do homework and go to sleep.

In between that, you don’t have much time for anything else. As long as your parents see that you’re doing positive things and staying busy – they’re pretty much happy.

Have a One on One Conversation

If your parents are annoying you that bad to where you just can’t take it anymore, I would suggest having a heart to heart talk with them.

Sit down with them and explain to them your concerns. If you do it in a respectful manner, I’m sure they’ll be more than willing to listen.

There’s nothing worse than having your feelings bottled up inside and not letting them out. Many teens seem to think that parents are impossible to connect with, but you have to remember that they were once teens too. All you have to do is give them your time and they’ll listen. Heck, they’ll probably be even thrilled that you want to talk to them.

Do What You’re Supposed to Do

This one is really simple to do, but you may not think so. Would you agree that when your parents annoy you, it’s because they’re nagging you about something that you’re not doing (Hand raised)?

That was me all day. The only times my parents really got on my nerves was when they would talk about something I wasn’t doing. “Scarlet clean your room,” “Scarlet, make your bed,” Scarlet, wash the dishes.” You have no idea how bad that got on my nerves.

But you know what I realized? If I were to just do the things they asked me to do – or better yet, try and do them before they asked me – then the less of their mouths I would hear. I mean I love my parents to pieces, but sometimes they could really get me going.

So, I figure if you do the same thing, then the less nagging you would hear coming from your parents. It makes sense when you think about it.

So there you go – a few ways to get your annoying parents off your back. How do you deal with your parents when they get on your nerves? Let’s talk about it.

  1. my parents are incredibly annoying and none of these suggestions help. they bug me about sports (extra-curricular activies) i dont WANT to talk one on one with them and why would i try and work hard to make them happy. heres an actual tip. tell them to leave u the fuck alone or you’ll become a stripper. that’ll shut them up.

    • Hi Crystal,

Ummm, I’m not sure that’s the best advice, lol, although I do get where you’re coming from. You’re not working hard to make them happy, you’re pretty much keeping yourself busy so that they don’t bug you. The one on one conversation may help if they are overwhelming you. If you have strict parents or parents who don’t play that, I’ll actually be praying for whoever tells their parents what you suggested because they may not see the light of another day.

  2. Dear Scarlet,
I know this might be weird about a boy being on this website but I really need your help… I’ve been trying to persuade my parents into letting me play paintball and buy equipment but every time I try to talk them into it (following your advice from this page and others,) they keep giving me these long lectures or a long BORING list of reasons why… If you could help me I’d be very grateful.

    With doubt,

    • Hi Gabriel,

It depends on how old you are and the reason why your parents don’t want you to play. It might be a challenge trying to talk them into letting you play. Many parents don’t allow their children to play with anything that looks like a gun. My brother-in-law is fairly young and his mother won’t allow him to play with anything that resembles a gun. It would help for me to know why they don’t want you to play. What reasons do they give you?

      • They’d say things like, “I don’t appreciate it that you play a sport that you’d be shooting people for fun.” Or thing like,”I don’t want you to shoot your eye out.” Even though you wear masks that completely cover your face(told then that a million times) and that also I’m at the legal age to play (15 years old by the way.) could you please help me with tips to cool me down because I get stressed easily. PLZ HELP!!!

        • Hi Gabriel,

This is nothing to get yourself worked up over. Perhaps if you were able to show your parents the equipment and how you’ll be covered up then that would help. I know how frustrating it can be when your parents won’t let you do something that you want to do.

However, they’re just being parents. They’re looking out for your safety and well being. They’re not telling you no just for the fun of it. They’re telling you no because they care about you and they don’t want to see you get hurt.

Try sitting down with them and giving then the pros to playing paintball. It will definitely keep you occupied and it’s something you enjoy doing. You’ll have on gear that will protect you. It’s really just like any other sport.

There’s a risk of getting hurt in any sport you play right? In basketball you can risk tearing a muscle, in football you can get too many blows to the head, in baseball you can get hit with the ball, and the list goes on and on.

Let your parents know how much this really means to you and if you want it bad enough, ante up the stakes by offering to do more around the house. Your parents might see how much this means to you and break down and let you play.

Whenever you get stressed just relax. Go somewhere and lie down. I normally go somewhere quiet and listen to Pandora. It really helps me to relax my mind. Good luck 🙂

          • Thanks Scarlet!!! BTW the thing that I don’t get is that they let me skateboard which is 10x more dangerous with all the falling, risk of getting serious concussions, breaking bones, or any other injury you can think of. in paintball, the only “injury” is the golf ball-sized welt you get after getting shot (without proper equipment) but hey, as you said, they only want my safety and well being… again, Thanks for your help!!!

            Gabriel 🙂

  3. I swear I cannot stand my family any longer. Give me a way to stay away from them without any reasons of how to try to get along with them!

    • Angie,

I won’t give you any reasons of how to get along with them if you don’t want me to. If you want to stay away from them then you can try hanging outside of the house as much as you can. You know, hang at the movies or at friend’s houses. However, I think you should try to work things out with your family. I didn’t give you reasons, I just stated my opinion.
